The Story of L/Cpl John Bardgett
From Border Regiment Wiki
The following pages are the result of my interest in the Great War and especially in my great grandfather John Bardgett, who was killed in action on the 1st July, 1916, not far from where he lies now in Lonsdale Cemetery; a short distance from Authuille and Thiepval in the backdrop of beautiful French countryside.
This is first and foremost a tribute to John and is dedicated to his memory and the memory of all those who served in the 11th Battalion Border Regiment. The main focus for these pages is to cover the time up to and including the first day in July 1916 when the order to advance on the German front line was given, ultimately when John was killed. Other elements go beyond this time mainly to give a wider view of the battalion’s movements and portrayal of live up to and including the time the battalion was disbanded in July 1918.
To navigate through the pages simply click on the 'next' and 'back' links; these ensure you follow the structure and flow of the story from the beginning. Throughout the story there will be links to other pages that connect with the main story giving further information relating to places (with images and maps thereof), casualty figures, John's obituary and many others. This is the 11th Battalion of the Border Regiment and their involvement in the First World War.
