Divisions were either infantry or cavalry and were categorised into three main areas, these being the Regular Army (professional), the Territorial Force (part-time) and the New Army (wartime). The Territorial Cavalry was referred to as Yeomanry.

Divisions during WWI usually consisted of around ten to fifteen thousand soldiers and were considerable in size. These military units were composed of three Brigades and each brigade were made up of four regimental Battalions. At full strength a battalion would have between 800 and 1000 men. With the addition of the Pioneers the division was complete. Several divisions made up a Corps and several Corps made up an Army.
